Half the stuff you read in magazines about celebrities, like
having their blood changed, or insisting on their dressing rooms being sprinkled with Tibetan yak breath cologne
collected only on July 15 before they perform, is mostly a load of bulldust from a public relations company's spin
machine.
But it keeps magazines in business and stars on front pages. Most of the stuff is harmless twaddle - until you
come across stories that give 'weight' to accusations that the media can promote eating disorders. This one caught
our eye:
Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell is being injected with a cocktail of vitamins to combat tiredness.
The Electronic Telegraph news service in the UK featured the story after the former Ginger Spice appeared at an
instore promotion for her new album. Journalist Hugh Davies quotes her publicist as saying Geri was feeling healthier
and happier since a nurse began injecting her with vitamins.
If Geri needs to be injected with vitamins then clearly she isn't eating properly.
What bothers us about "celebrity diets and tips" is the quick fix mentality it promotes. It seems any
quack fad diet or trend gains instant credibility if someone famous has tried it. We assume if Geri does it, then
it must be okay.
Assume nothing! Celebrities are real people - they just lead an unreal lifestyle that bears no resemblance to how
you or I live. Celebrities can also be bought.
And remember, a lot of stuff you read is a complete
fabrication just to keep them in the spotlight.
Geri Halliwell has lost a stack of weight. Possibly the effects of a very busy schedule, maybe after pressure from
the constant media attention about her waistline written by nasty little people from behind the relative safety
of their desks.
Geri had a tough upbringing and has been very open about her battle with bulimia, which makes her such an inspiration
to young women who have suffered eating disorders. She has done some fine work as a UN Goodwill Ambassador in raising
issues about teenage sex education, and helping women and girls see that they do have a power.
She is a STRONG, beautiful and talented woman who looked fabulously healthy in her Spice Girl days. When someone
like Geri Halliwell loses weight so dramatically, the world takes notice. Especially those she inspires. Unfortunately
ED sufferers might also see Geri's weight loss as clear proof that starving yourself can lead to success, when
we know it does not.
It's a very confusing message from the star herself.
The very same press who called her "Saggy Spice" and taunted her publicly about her weight is now the
same press who criticize her for losing weight.
In Geri's case, we can absolutely blame the media for her eating disorder. |
