The show begins with Syd dreaming of herself and her family on
an island, playing Survivor. Each is confident that they won't be the ones voted off: Robbie says he's the only
one who can kill rats; Joannie says she's the only one who can cook them; Jim points out that he's the only one
who has a knowledge of animals; and Syd says she's a doctor, and they might need her. But she is voted off! She
says, "But I'm a doctor!!", to which her mother responds, "Who knows if you even remember how to
be a doctor."
Syd meets Joannie in the kitchen. She has decided she's going back to work early - she misses it. Joannie mentions
some dissatisfaction in her relationship with Bert, which surprises Syd. Joannie explains that they haven't been
physically intimate yet, with all that's been going on. So she's planning to find seductive Halloween costumes
for herself and Bert, for a party to which she's been invited. She's considering a princess costume for herself.
Syd seems to recall being a princess one year, but Joannie corrects her: she was a doctor, every single year!
When Syd leaves for work, her physical therapist is there waiting for her at the car. He tells her to drive, but
Syd is nervous about driving. She tells him she's planning to return to work today. He doesn't think it's a good
idea, but she explains that being a doctor is her self-identity and she's lost without it. He advises she do only
half-days.
ROBBIE
While Robbie is at work at O'Neill's, a policeman enters and asks for him. He informs Robbie that the "Down
On Your Luck" TV set burnt down, and it has been found to be arson. A matchbook from O'Neill's was found at
the scene. They realize he had almost won a huge sum of money, and might be feeling vengeful. Also, they've seen
his past record. He insists he didn't even know about it.
After the policeman leaves, Andie, the producer from the game show, enters. She is furious with him for bailing
out of her scheme to rig the show and split the winnings. She demands the $10,000 which would have been her cut
of the deal. If he doesn't provide her with the money, she will testify that he was at the scene of the fire, and
she knows that he burnt down his neighbor's garage when he was fifteen.
Robbie goes to Joannie and tells her he wants to cash out of his 10 percent ownership of the Barkery. She tallies
it all up, and hands him the figure: over $12,000! He asks if that's his share. No, that's the amount of debt they're
still in!
Robbie goes to Heather, and tells her he needs to ask her a huge favor. She instinctively knows he means cash,
and hands him a beautiful ring given to her by her mother back when they were engaged. He thanks her and tells
her he will pay her back. She says that he won't, and that she has realized that if she wants to be friends with
him, she cannot expect things from him. He hugs her and leaves.
Robbie takes the ring to a pawnshop, and the owner asks him what he wants for it. "Ten?", he asks, hopefully.
The man says, "I can give you twelve." Robbie's delighted, until he receives the money: twelve dollars!
He tells the man he meant twelve thousand. He informs Robbie that the ring is just costume jewelry, made of paste.
When Andie returns to the bar to collect her money, Robbie tells her he's going to have to call her bluff. She
says she never bluffs. A policeman steps out then and arrests her.
JOANNIE
Joannie is frustrated that her relationship with Bert isn't moving as fast as she would like. She tells him about
the Halloween party, but he'd rather they stay in at his place.... which sounds great until he adds, "There's
a Patriots game I don't want to miss."
However, she later talks him into going to the party. She wants him to go as a fireman, because he's in his element
when he's in a uniform, like when he was Zorro when they first met last Halloween, and when he rescued her during
the Barkery fire. He doesn't want to - he IS a fireman. But he agrees to attend, and to wear the costume she orders
for him.
At the party, she's waiting for Bert, dressed in her Little Bo Peep costume (reminiscent of last Halloween). When
Zorro comes over to her, she tells him she's been waiting a long time and has earned the right to be a little naughty.
They go out to the van and begin necking, when the passenger door is opened and someone hauls Zorro out and punches
him. The attacker removes his mask, and it's Bert. Joannie tells him she can explain, but he walks away. "Zorro"
has no clue what just happened!
Later, Joannie goes to Bert and says, "Look, I thought he was you!". He tells her he knows: the costume
shop explains that they mixed up the costumes. Then why, she asks, didn't you return my calls? He tells her that
he realizes things aren't going as fast as she wants, but he has rushed into things before and regretted it. He
doesn't want to spoil things, because he loves her. She tells him they can take things as slowly as he wants! They
embrace.
JIM
Jim is trying to train his new dog, Fearless, as Heather watches. He has no luck whatsoever. This mildly bothers
him. Later, he remarks to Heather that he knows why it hasn't worked: he checked Fearless, and he cannot hear.
There is a membrane covering his ear canal, and it can be surgically removed. Heather tells him she realizes he
was beginning to worry that the problem was himself.
After the surgery, Jim tries again, and Fearless does not do what he tells him to do, coming when he is supposed
to sit. He rewards him anyway, though Heather warns him this will just further confuse the dog. To prove her point,
Fearless now sits when he is called to come to Jim.
SYD
When Syd returns to work at the clinic, Dr. Jordan Roberts, who has filled in for her, expresses concern that she
is returning to work so soon after her coma, and tells her he has everything under control. When a longtime patient
of Syd's has a seizure, Dr. Roberts orders a dose of a seizure-controlling medication, but Syd overrides him, using
a full 2 mg pediatric dose, more than Dr. Roberts requested. He asks if she's sure she wants to use so much. She
does. The patient, Sarah, goes into respiratory arrest. Dr. Roberts looks at Syd and tells her "I told you
it was too much." They have to intubate Sarah. "Welcome back", he tells her sarcastically. Syd is
flustered and shaken.
When she returns home, her physical therapist has planned gardening as her activity for the day. She tells him
he was right about her not going back to work so soon, and tells him what happened at the clinic. He thinks she
should trust herself, and recommends miniature golf as a confidence-building activity. He will set up a course
for her, and tells her the second step to the plan is that she return to work right away. A patient sometimes knows
instinctively what's right for herself, and she said being a doctor is what she needs.
When she returns to the clinic the next day, Dr. Roberts is clearly displeased, and surprised, that she has returned,
and tells her so. She notices blueprint plans sticking out of his pocket, and asks him about them. He has taken
the liberty of making plans to enlarge the clinic, and has called together to board to meet about it today at 5
pm - Syd is welcome to join them, of course. She will. When she leaves him, she asks Iggy what she knows about
Roberts. Her response is that they didn't have time to find out much, because they had to hire him on so suddenly
when Syd fell ill. Syd asks Iggy to check out his references.
When Syd visits Sarah at the hospital, the mother, Nancy, is angry with Syd. She tells her how worried parents
always are that anything could happen to their children. She tells Syd she is suing her for malpractice, and has
already spoken with her attorney about it. She doesn't want the money, but she wants to keep Syd from hurting another
child.
When Syd sees her therapist again, she tells him she still cannot figure out why that amount of the drug (vorazipan???)
given to Sarah would cause respiratory arrest. He asks her what her gut tells her. She says it tells her that somehow,
Dr. Roberts is responsible.
At the clinic, Iggy informs Syd that Dr. Roberts' credentials are impeccable. He has been awarded an NIH award,
he completed his residency at one of the best hospitals. Just then, Roberts comes by with the board. They tell
her Dr. Roberts' plans are wonderful, and that the clinic has been running so well ever since he came on board.
She wonders why they're concluding, since the meeting was supposed to be at 5:00. Dr. Roberts insists she is mistaken:
he told her 4:00.
At the hospital later, Syd inquires from the staff if a toxicology screen was run on Sarah when she was admitted.
They will not answer her questions, because of the pending lawsuit against her. They suggest she takes several
more weeks off, and then discuss with them the future of her job.
At home, Syd dreams of her mother. They are in black and white, and the scenery and clothing of the passersby is
that of the 1940s. A headline on a newspaper reads, "Syd's Life Crashes!". Her mother tells her she's
looking in the wrong places. Vorazipan (??), the medication given to Sarah, is in the benzodiazepine family, like
Valium, her mother explains, as Syd listens on in amazement. Linda continues, asking how the FDA classifies it.
As a controlled substance, Syd answers: they keep it locked up, and chart its use. Bingo!
At the clinic, Syd checks the charts with Iggy. After Sarah's dose, there should be 4 pediatric doses left, and
two adult doses left. Instead, there are 5 pediatric doses left and one adult dose left (which contains much more
than the amount of a pediatric dose). There is a fax coming in for Syd. Iggy asks if it's good news - "Not
for Dr. Roberts", Syd replies.
Syd is waiting for Dr. Roberts. She asks how he could risk the life of a 6 year-old. She figures he was confident
that he could resuscitate her. He reminds her that she's the one who gave Sarah the full dose. She tells him he
deliberately gave her an adult dose, to ruin her standing and gain the confidence of the board, and then he'd run
off with the money they were investing in the enlargement project. He tells her it's her word against his. She
informs him that his word won't count for much, because Jordan Roberts is a woman, and has been dead for seven
months! He's not who he says he is. He tells her she can't prove it, and she won't be able to get the board to
believe it. She tells him she's already invited them; he turns around, and they're all right there in the room
with him.
At the hospital, Syd sits by Sarah's bed. Sarah awakens and asks Syd if she's going to be okay. Syd hugs her and
happily tells her she's fine.
PREVIEWS
for next week: "Joannie's new boyfriend has a secret"; Joannie vows to him that she won't give up on
their relationship because of a sexual problem. Syd's Prince Charming (??? who's that - the physical therapist
whose name I can't remember, or someone else?) has been charming all the ladies, and he's slept over with another
pretty lady... |
