The show begins with Syd dreaming. Her mother drags her into a church, and she watches as Jim and Monica walk down
the aisle arm in arm dressed in wedding best. She tells her mother she thinks it's sweet her father is giving away
the bride. Then she realizes Jim is marrying Monica, not giving her away. She goes up to the altar and tries to
object, and tells Monica friends don't marry other friend's fathers, but they marry anyway and walk back up the
aisle.
ROBBIE
Robbie is continuing to win big on the game show. The producer is still giving him hints, though she claims it's
not intentional. So far, he's won $10,000!
JOANNIE
While baking at the Barkery, Joannie's kitchen catches on fire, and when she goes to try to put it out, she falls
and passes out. Some passersby call 911, and the Fire Department arrives. A fireman brings her to safety, while
another extinguishes the flames, and he resuscitates her. She wakes and looks into his eyes, and recognizes him.
He smiles. It's the bartender she talked to when she had met "Zorro" at the costume party and was trying
to find him again. (We know he IS Zorro, but Joannie doesn't).
Syd and Robbie come rushing home when they hear about Joannie, who is asleep in bed. Bert (the fireman/bartender)
is holding Hannah outside the bedroom, but goes back to work when the Hansens arrive. Syd tries to call her dad,
but can't locate him anywhere. She leaves a message on Monica's answering machine, which he hears, since he and
Monica are snuggling on the couch.
The next day, Bert comes by the Barkery with cinnamon buns for Joannie. She thanks him. There's a definite "spark"
between them (pun intended.) She offers him treats for his dog, but he is currently dogless... but he thinks that's
an excellent reason to get a dog. They talk about that night at the bar, and she jokes with her about always dreaming
about those fairy tales in which she gets swept off her feet - and how he literally just did it - and he tells
her she should change fairy tales: she's the one who's doing the sweeping.
Later he visits her, and he's actually gotten a dog: a young dalmation, whom he names Smokey. She finally realizes
he was Zorro! He tells her he's normally a calm guy, but he's going to combust if he doesn't kiss her right then.
She's happy to help him out.
SYD
Syd gets a call at the clinic from an old friend: John Currier. John (played by Dan Lauria) is a man who owned
an ice cream stand where she worked in the summer during high school. She's delighted to hear from him, until she
realizes he's calling from the hospital. She senses it's serious.
Syd visits John, and finds him uncomfortable. He explains it's his pancreas. He isn't expected to make it through
the summer. He shows her a picture of a boat he just bought, hoping he'd be able to go fishing. In the hallway,
she speaks with his physician. She asks if a number of different procedures have been tried, but he's tried them
all. John has been on an experimental treatment, but is not responding. They tried to operate, but there was just
too much cancer.
Later, Syd comes to take him out. They go to the pier, where he sees his new boat. She wants to take him out on
it, but he's too weak. He enjoys just sitting there and looking at it. She thanks him for giving her the confidence
to try working in the lab, and starting on the path towards becoming a doctor. He tells her he kept working and
put off having a family, and she and the other kids were his family.
When she comes to visit him the next time, the room is empty. He has passed away. She goes for a walk near the
water and cries.
JIM & MONICA
Syd is concerned about her father, as he seems to be getting serious about Monica, who is not the type to settle
down for long. Robbie says to let him enjoy the fun - Jim is dancing on air these days. Syd decides to invite Monica
over for dinner so they can check her out with Jim and see if she's serious.
Syd finds Jim looking a little down, and asks why he's home. He tells her Monica is busy doing research for her
next project this evening. She tells her father about her plans to invite Monica for dinner, and he's thrilled.
He tells her she'll be home on the computer all evening, so she drives over to invite Monica.
When Syd arrives outside Monica's house, she sees Monica greeting a young man who has just arrived. Monica and
this man kiss, and then go up to her apartment.
Syd comes home and tells Joannie about it, but Joannie - positively glowing now from her own happiness with Bert
- tells her not to be so quick to assume the worst. Syd goes through with the dinner, but she's very upset with
Monica and worried about her father.
During the dinner, Syd is quite cold towards Monica. Monica abruptly excuses herself, and Syd follows her. She
tells her she's concerned about her father and wants to know how Monica really feels about him. Is she just playing
the field, or does she really think her father could be The One? Monica says she isn't sure yet, but she genuinely
cares for him. Syd then tells her she saw her kissing that man the previous night. Monica bristles, asking if Syd
is spying on her, but Syd says she had been coming over to invite her to dinner. Just then, Jim comes up to see
what's going on, and Monica tells him everything's fine, so they return to dinner.
The next morning, Syd is in bed, dreaming she is walking into the kitchen and sees her mom from behind at the stove.
When her mother turns, however, it's not Linda, but rather Monica wearing a blonde wig and her mother's dress.
Robbie comes in and kisses her, and Joannie calls her "mom".
Syd gratefully wakes up, but her dad is knocking on her door. He comes in and makes it clear that he's angry with
her for her behavior at the previous night's dinner. He doesn't know why she can't be happy for him.
Syd comes in later, and Jim is still very angry with her. She tells him that John Currier just died. They go for
a walk together on the waterfront. She tells him that she and John had talked just like the old times, and she
thinks he put off the pleasures of life until it was too late; she thinks he really wishes he had a family. He
tells her lots of people put off happiness. She tells him she's sorry about her reaction to Monica, but she just
worries about him. The rules have changed since he got married, she tells him; unless people say so, they don't
consider themselves to be dating exclusively... (nice way of hinting). They go for a ride on John's boat together,
arms around each other.
PREVIEWS FOR NEXT WEEK: Syd collapses and is taken to the hospital. She faces
death...
