The Storm
#217 ~ March 17, 2000

by PapaC

The show begins with Syd dreaming. A Noreaster storm is headed their way, and although she says she is calm, her mother says she's as frightened as a child. The newsreporter tells them it's headed straight for the Hansen house!

In the morning, Syd tells Joannie that a city inspector is visiting the clinic today. She has applied for city funds and wants to make a good impression.

When asked if anyone has talked to Robbie, Joannie says she talked to Heather the previous day in the midafternoon, and they were still in bed. She and Robbie have been having lots of quality time together since the wedding rescue.

Syd braves the beginning of the storm and heads off to work. At the clinic, Syd meets the inspector, who is a grump. He cuts short her pleasantries as rudely as possible, and tells her he wants to inspect the roof. Meanwhile, she attends to her patients. A very pregnant Chinese woman is with her ill father, and neither speaks English. She tries to explain to Syd the problem, but cannot. He is vomiting and in discomfort. Syd palpates his abdomen, which is distended, and feels an enlarged spleen. Syd says to arrange for hospital transport.

The inspector catches her and tells her he is closing down the clinic because the roof is unsafe. Everyone is to be out within an hour.

Meanwhile, Joannie is visited by Doug at the Barkery. Doug brings her sandbags. She asks if it's really going to be that bad, and he informs her he's from Newfoundland and is absolutely sure it will be bad indeed. He tells her not to worry: he won't leave her side. She gazes into his eyes, and it appears that he's going to kiss her, but he walks on by.

At Robbie and Heather's, they are still playing newlyweds. Robbie gives her a diamond ring, and tells her he's not good at weddings. He's booked them a flight leaving the next hour, so they've got to hurry to get out before the storm hits. They're off to "Paradise".

At the Hansen's, Jim is dealing with the storm. The basement leaks from the heavy rains, and the animals are transported upstairs into the living room in their cages. Doug and Joannie arrive home and help with this task. When they're alone, Jim asks Joannie what Doug is doing with her, and she explains that he showed up with sandbags to save her, and he's a great guy. He warns her to think very carefully before getting involved with him right now. When Jim counts the animals, he finds that a hound is missing. They split up to search, but have no luck. Doug and Jim go out in search of the dog.

Back at the clinic, Syd's patient is in much discomfort. Ambulances are all booked up and the roads have been closed. She cannot move her patient or even get his labwork out, so she does the blood test herself. She realizes that he has malaria, though she cannot tell which strain. She talks to the daughter, and the daughter nods that yes he has malaria and has been on a quinine medication. They need to get more medicine, but cannot get to the hospital. One of Syd's coworkers volunteers to go on foot the 3 miles to the hospital. Syd has told the others to go home, because they'll all get in trouble and risk funding if they're not out immediately, but they can't get home anyway, they say with a supportive smile. Syd tries to communicate with her patient's daughter by talking to the woman's husband, who speaks English. He is on a boat several miles out, and is talking via cell phone. He is able to help, but calls back later with an urgent message: his boat is sinking, the coast guard can't be reached, and he needs to say goodbye to his wife. She tearfully talks to her husband. Soon, though, the coast guard calls back with word that her husband is okay.

Syd's grumpy inspector insists they move the man and get out of the building, but just then, the daughter's water breaks and she goes into labor. Syd tells the guy no one is going anywhere, and she does the delivery in the examining room. Her coworker arrives with the medication for the father.

Robbie and Heather, meanwhile, are in Las Vegas. She shops for a dress, while he starts to play blackjack. He quickly wins $10,000 and she leaves him to finish preparing for the wedding. She tells him he should stop, but he says he knows what he's doing and you can't stop with a losing hand. When she returns later, he's lost it all, including their plane tickets back, but insists on trying to win his money back. She tells him she wants him to stop now, and he stays behind. He apologizes for his mistake, but she warns him that his real mistake is the one he's making right now by not coming back to the room with her. He foolishly stays behind, losing more and more. She returns later with her bags packed. She has bought them tickets back home, but they leave in an hour, and the seats will not be together. She tells him she loves him, but isn't so sure they can be together. She walks off.

Doug and Jim are out in the storm looking for the missing hound. They run out of ideas and wait it out in the car, and cannot go back home because of the road closings. Doug decides to have a heart-to-heart with Jim, telling him how much he cares for Joannie and is trying to tell her so. Jim advises him to go really slowly. He thanks Jim for his advice. Suddenly, Doug has an idea and asks if the dog ever had another owner. Jim says yes, they had left him behind when they moved away to an apartment. Doug asks where they used to live, and it's nearby. The men go to the vacant home, and the dog is inside.

All this time, poor Joannie has been having a nightmarish experience at home. While she is on the phone with the police asking for assistance in tracking down Doug and Jim, who have been gone much longer than expected, a tree falls through the kitchen window and pins her on the floor. Luckily, Hannah is in her playpen, but Joannie is trapped. When Hannah cannot understand to throw Joannie the phone, Joannie finally gets a wind-up toy to knock a broom within her reach, and uses it to reach the phone. She explains her situation, that she's not hurt but is trapped under a tree, but she apparently isn't given emergency status. She is trapped for what seems like an eternity. Finally, Jim and Doug return home with the dog and find her. Jim lifts up the tree and Doug pulls her out. She falls into Doug's arms in a passionate embrace.

The next morning, the storm is gone and the girls and Jim survey the damage. At least everyone is safe.
