Katherine kept running long after she got out of Spence’s building. In
love! Who did he think he was ?
They were friends. Great friends. Could she really have been that blind? This was too much.
First Al freaking out about her and Spence. She laughed at the irony. Then her father. She felt her heart clench
at the thought again. And now, her and Spence. She needed a walk to calm herself before going home.
When she arrived at the house, it was dark. She hadn’t realized that she’d been gone for so long. She quietly
opened the door taking extra care not to make noise.
"Where were you?" she heard a voice seep out from the dark.
"Al!" she nearly screamed. "You scared me."
"So did you my dear, so did you." he scolded.
"After our, um, conversation I got a phone call. My father’s dead, Al. He’s dead. I had to leave. Go for a
walk. Katherine summarized. "For all this time?" he asked in disbelief.
"Yes, Daddy was everything to me. He loved me like momma never could." Or
would. she thought to herself.
"While I am extremely sorry about your father," he began "being gone for such a long time, well
it just isn’t right."
‘I’m sorry Al. I just needed to be alone."
"It’s alright now. I’ll forgive you if you make it up to me." Alistair oozed in a sickening tone.
Katherine was at this point such a tumult of emotions that nothing made sense any more.
Later, she wouldn’t even remember Alistair taking her by the hand and leading her upstairs.
Katherine glance at the calendar. Tuesday. She and Spencer hadn’t had any contact since the night at his apartment.
It was strange, not seeing him. Telling him everything. This time though, it worked out. She wasn’t feeling great.
She hadn’t felt well for the last few day. Lisa shrugged it off, telling her it was just a bug. She couldn’t pretend
anymore. Doctors freaked her out, but she had to go. Something was wrong.
She shifted anxiously in the small gown given to her by the nurse. "Katherine?" came the doctors voice.
"Yes?" she replied.
"I have news for you. A few things I’d like to talk to you about." he began calmly. "First off -
"How far along?" she asked.
"Two, maybe three weeks. It’s very early." he continued.
He continued on talking, but he had lost her attention. She stood up and crossed the small room to a picture on
"Is this your family?" she asked holding the framed print in her hand.
"Yes. Yes it is." he admitted.
"They’re beautiful. Your wife is gorgeous and those two boys - adorable."
Katherine seemed to regain focus on the doctor.
"Now the other thing we need to talk about - Katherine, wont you sit down?" he asked motioning to the
