There Isn’t Always a Happy Ending

Chapter 4

“Wow!! That meal was fabulous!” Kay said putting down her fork.

Everyone politely agreed as Luis started to clear away the table. The six of them enjoyed an exquisite dinner of Linguini and clam sauce along with Caesar salad and garlic bread. They also shared wonderful stories and memories. They laughed so much that their stomachs hurt.

Ethan didn’t take his eyes off of Theresa the whole night and by her stories and everyone else’s he had gotten to know her little by little.

He memorized every detail of her from her smile to her favorite movie.

He shook out of his thoughts when everyone started to get up from the table.

“Lets put in a movie!” Said Sheridan as she began cleaning up the kitchen.

“Good idea.”Said Luis.

“Here Sheridan I’ll help you clean up.” Said Kay as she got up from the table.

“Well, you guys since the park is so close I think I’m going to take a walk and get some fresh air.” Theresa said reaching for her coat.

“May I join you?” Ethan said quickly rushing over and helping her with her coat.

She hesitated a moment, “Um sure Ethan.”

“Where are you going?” Luis said walking into the kitchen with a movie in his hand. He walked over and put his arm around his baby sister. “My baby sister soon to be a famous fashion designer!”

“Oh Luis!” Theresa said playfully hitting him on the arm. “I’ve decided to take a walk and Ethan is going to join me.”

Ethan perked up at the thought of her showing a small amount of interest in him.

“Hey! Why don’t you pick up some ice cream while you’re out!” Miguel said wrapping his arms around Kay’s waist.

Theresa laughed, “Maybe! Will be back in a bit.” She said as they walked out the door.

They walked around Lighthouse Park for about 15 minutes in complete silence.

Theresa stared up at the stars basking in their beauty, as she did every night. She finally sat down on a small bench still staring at the sky.

Ethan could see in her face all the depth that was in her and all of the feeling. He just wished she would say something anything. ‘Why would she show any interest in me? She to good for me.’ His thoughts were broken.

“You know what?” Theresa said still staring at the sky but brought her head down slowly and looked right into his eyes. It took all of his strength not to kiss her.

“I love the stars, they hold so much feeling and love.” She stopped and smiled. “If you haven’t noticed I big believer in fate but for a while there I didn’t believe in it.”

“Well, I think it’s amazing that you actually believe in something. I don’t really have much to believe in anymore.” Ethan said solemnly.

“Why? You have everything in the world and you have so much you can do with it.”

“I sometimes wish I wasn’t born into money and I wouldn’t have all of this responsibility.”

“You’re the new head of the Crane Empire! Don’t you realize how much you can do with that? I’m not talking about money or power, but you can use your money for so many good things like charities. Ethan, don’t you realize how lucky you are?”

“You want my life take it! I can’t handle it anymore.” Ethan shook his head.

Theresa placed her hand on his. He shuddered at her touch that shot electric sparks through his body. Something he never felt before.

“Ethan, you can do whatever you want with your life you can make it whatever you want it. Since you have so much given to you. You can give back so much. Don’t ever let anyone control you. You can.........”

Not thinking Ethan leaned over and just kissed her. So much passion shot into the air. What was surprising was that she kissed back with just as much force.

Until...........she pulled away abruptly.

“Ethan, my God what are we doing????” She said jumping up off the bench.

“I’m so sorry Theresa.” Ethan said reaching for her hands.

“No, I better go!” Theresa said turning around and rushing away.

Ethan slumped down into the bench. ‘Stupid!’ He thought as he placed his head in his hands.

“Ethan?” He shot his head up and Theresa had reappeared.

“It’s ok.” She smiled and walked away.

Theresa walked into her bedroom and threw her coat in her closet.

‘Why did he kiss me? He’s probably trying just......oh i don’t know!’ She pushed into her head as she headed to the bathroom to get ready for bed.

She laid in bed and tossed and turned.

“Oh my gosh! I can’t take this!” Theresa said jumping out of her bed after an hour or so.

She walked up to her window and stared at the beautiful full moon.

“I promised myself I would never let myself fall in love ever again after Noah. Why can’t he just leave my head!” Theresa said touching her lips in memory of the kiss.

She sighed and stared at the bright moon.

Ethan sat on his window seat and stared up at the moon. He touched his lips in memory of her silky lips being on his.

He shook his thoughts, “She has me mesmerized.” He said aloud as he stared at the moon.

“Tomorrow is the first day of my new life.” Ethan said.

“And what does that mean?” A voice sliced behind him.
