Don’t Think I’m Not

Chapter 24

"Hey Keith." Gwen sighed walking into his office. "How’d the thing go?"

"Fine. All amended. Dria said you needed this." Keith responded, standing up and handing her the transcript.

"Thanks." Gwen smiled.

"No problem. Osmond was asking about you."

"Really?" She felt a shiver go down her spine.

"Yeah. Adriana told me what happened to you. You should really leave the office early. It’s more dangerous in the dark." Keith suggested.

"I might do that. I don’t know yet."

"Whatever, it’s your choice." Keith shrugged his shoulders and sat back down.

"Alright. Thanks." Gwen smiled and left the office. ‘Maybe I should call Hank and ask what he thinks.’ She thought, entering her office. She picked up her phone and subconsciously dialed Hank’s cell phone number.

"Bennett." He gruffly said.

"Hank, it’s me, Gwen."

"Hi. What’s wrong?"

"Nothing." Gwen denied. "Keith made a comment and it got me thinking. Should I leave the office early from now on? Or can I leave at the normal time?"

"Um, leave early to be on the safe side." Hank stated.

"Alright. I’m gonna leave around five then. I’ll see you at home." Gwen stated, starting to smile.

"I can’t wait. I’ll leave around then too. I don’t want you home alone." Hank replied.

"Alright. Can’t wait."

"Be careful. Bye." Hank warned.

"Bye." Gwen said, and listened as the line went dead. Sighing heavily, she looked at her clock. ‘An hour to go.’

Gwen hummed lightly as she walked to her car. She pulled her keys from her purse and stuck them in the door.

"Hmm, that’s strange. I could of sworn I locked this." She commented upon realizing the door was unlocked. She shrugged it off and entered her car. Quickly she stuck her key in the ignition and turned it. After the car started in a small roar, she played with the radio until a hand came around her seat and stuffed a rag over her mouth. She struggled briefly, but soon gave in to the chloroform that was on the rag.

"Gwen you here?" Hank frantically asked as he entered her house. It was six o’clock and her car was not in her space. He was worried to say the least. What could have happened to her?

Silence answered his question. He walked over to the phone and dialed Sheridan’s number. ‘Maybe she’s at her house. God let her be at Sher’s house.’ After three rings, Luis picked up the phone.

"Hello?" He asked.

"Luis, hi. Um, is Gwen there?" Hank asked.

"No, why?" Luis replied.

"Dammit!" Hank yelled.

"Hank, what’s wrong?" Luis asked, his voice full of concern.

"Someone threatened her last night, and I can’t find her now." Hank explained, racking his brain for another place she may be.

"Well, did you try work?" Luis answered as though it was obvious.

"No, she was gonna leave at five." Hank snapped.

"Well, maybe she got tied up. Call her work Hank, I bet she’s there." Luis stated.

"For the love of God I hope you’re right. Bye Luis." Hank said.

"Bye Ha-" Luis’s statement was cut off by Hanks slamming the phone down. He picked it back up and dialed Gwen’s number at the office. No one answered. Hank slammed the phone down before picking it back up and dialing Adriana’s number.

"Hello?" Adriana answered after the first ring. Her voice sounded full of worry.

"Adriana, it’s Hank Bennett. Is Gwen there?" Hank asked.

"No, I was about to call her home. The transcript and the video tape of the deposition have gone missing from the clerk’s office."

"Are you kidding me?" Hank asked, feeling his chest collapse.

"No, I’m not. We need the copies Gwen has." Adriana stated. "Is Gwen not home?" She asked.

"No. I can’t find her." Hank sighed, tears coming to his eyes.

"God. They’ve got her." Adriana said breathlessly.

"I know. When was the last time anyone seen her at the office?" Hank asked.

"Um, she stopped in my office before heading to her car. It was around 5:15. Oh God."

"We’ll find her. With God as my witness, we’ll find her." Hank said, determination suddenly filling his voice.

"What should we do? Do you want help?"

"No. Try to get a mistrial granted. They don’t want that. If the trial proceeds, then there’s a chance they could be acquitted."

"Okay. Please find her. She doesn’t deserve this." Adriana whispered.

"Count on it. I’m not letting that bastard get away with this." Hank stated, slamming the phone down. He grabbed his keys from the table and stomped out the door, determined to find Gwen.
