To Make Her Smile
by Fate

Chapter Three

The tension in the car disappeared as Ethan opened the door for Theresa. The scent of the ocean invaded Theresa’s senses, and a smile touched her lips.

"Can I take this thing off yet?" Theresa asked, allowing Ethan to hold her hand as he led her down the beach. His touch was so intoxicating…

Don’t go there! Her head screamed.

But it was too late. Theresa was once again opening her heart up to Ethan, even though she didn’t realize it

"Nope, not yet. Don’t worry though, you’ll be the first person to know when you can."

"Ha ha. You are just so funny, Ethan! "

"I know. But hey, what can I do?"

Theresa rolled her eyes beneath the blindfold. Ethan was just too cute!

A peaceful silence fell between them. Crashing waves and sounds from the pier filled the silence.

"Hey, Ethan…"

"I just wanted to apologize for lashing out at you in the car. Here you are, being the sweetest guy in the world, and instead of thanking you, I take out all of my problems on you. Can you forgive me?"

"Are you crazy, Theresa? What are best friends for if you can’t take out all your problems on them?" Ethan replied, pulling her into his arms for a hug.

There you go, Theresa. Case point one: he sees you as his best friend. No romantic feelings there.
But best friends make the best lovers!
her heart screamed out.

Ethan pulled Theresa closer, and he caught whiff of her perfume. The scent made him dizzy all over. He shook it off as hunger pains.

"You smell good," he said as he released her. "What is it?"

"Origin’s Spring Fever."

Spring Fever had just replaced warm chocolate chip cookies as his favorite scent.

They began to walk again. This time, it was Theresa who squeezed his hand.

"Ethan, I just wanted to thank you ahead of time for today. You are the most thoughtful, wonderful…friend a girl could have."

A full smile lit up her face. Ethan beamed at her response. FINALLY.

"Well, how can you thank me yet? You might hate what I have in store for you."

"I don’t think so. I trust you, remember?"

"Well, then, your welcome. I’m just trying to be the same kind of friend that you are."

The sounds from the pier drifted away, and Theresa got lost in her thoughts…

"Theresa…it’s my turn to apologize."

"What for? You are the greatest friend I’ve ever had! You listen tome, you don’t try to tell me what to do, like Whitney, you…you’re perfect!"

What he said next caused her heart to drop.

"I’m sorry to be the one that ripped your heart in to a bunch of little pieces."

Ethan sat her down on the warm sand, removing the blindfold. Theresa gaped at him, disbelieving.

"What…what are you talking about Ethan?" she murmured. How did he know?
She looked at the sand, tracing shapes in it with her finger.

"You were talking about me, weren’t you?" he said, lifting her chin so she would have to meet his gaze.

"I..I, um…"

His eyes were bright with wonder. Theresa was caught. She began to open her mouth to reveal her true feelings, but Ethan opened his first.

"What you were saying in the car, Theresa…you were so right! You just made me realize… True love IS about putting you whole heart and soul into someone else. For years, I thought that’s what I was doing with Gwen. But seeing you hurt, Theresa, it opened my eyes!"

Theresa’s heart was in her throat. Could this really be happening? After years of dreaming, was her dream coming true?

"Ethan, I-"

"Theresa, when I saw how badly you’d been hurt, it killed me too! I vowed to be the one bring you back to life! And then, what you were saying in the car, I realized that YOU were the one to bring ME to life. It’s exactly what you were saying, except…there IS someone who loves you, Theresa. It just took him a while to realize it!"

Theresa couldn’t find the words to express herself. He loved her. Ethan loved HER! After years of longing…

Ethan’s hopeful expression suddenly fell.

"Theresa…was I mistaken? You love someone else, don’t-"

"Shut up, Ethan Crane! I have something to tell you!"

"You were asking me for forgiveness. Well, I forgive you!"

It took Ethan a moment to figure out what she was saying. Before he had time to register what she was saying, she had pulled him to her by the collar of his shirt. She wrapped her arms around him, and her mouth found his.

"I love you Theresa," he whispered as he pulled away to stare into her eyes. The light was back in them, glowing more intensely than ever before.

"I love you too, Ethan," Theresa replied, drawing him back to her….

Yeah, right. Like THAT’S going to happen.

"I’ve been saying your name for like two minutes. I am now going to remove the blindfold."

Ethan gently sat her down on a blanket, then removed the scarf from her eyes. The sun was blinding. She squinted as her surroundings came into focus.

What she saw took her breath away.

Only open spaces surrounded them. It was as if they had left civilization altogether. The Atlantic Ocean sparkled bright blue, the waves crashing against boulders further up the beach. Ethan had though of everything! A huge wicker basket sat next to her on the blanket, as well as a radio, a bouquet of daisies, and beach toys.

"Sand buckets?" she asked, lifting up a bright green pail. Ethan smiled at her, his eyes laughing.

Ethan had thought of everything, the most important of which was him.

"Well, Theresa, we ARE on the beach, which is made of sand…"

Theresa giggled. She had forgotten how exhilarated she felt when she was around him.

"Sorry, Ethan. I just haven’t seen one of these in years."

"Well, I figured we could relive our youth. "

"Why not?" Theresa responded, setting the bucket down. She lifted the lid on the basket, and began pulling out an assortment of goodies.

"Yum!" She said, opening lids.

"I asked Pilar what your favorite food of all time was. She said macaroni and cheese, a real unique food, I might add, so that is our main course."

"And what’s this?" Theresa asked, pulling out a bag of marshmallows.

"Your favorite dessert," he laughed, taking the bag from her. " And mine too." Theresa then noticed a stack of wood several feet away from them.

"You thought of everything!" she marveled.

If Ethan doesn’t love you, why is he doing this for you?

"I, for one, am starving," Ethan said, handing Theresa a plate.

His fingers brushed hers, and Ethan felt a jolt run through his blood.

"Let’s eat!"

With that, Theresa began piling food onto his plate.

"I’m stuffed!"

Ethan lay back on the blanket, closing his eyes. Theresa looked at him and laughed. His eyes popped open, and he turned towards her.

"What's so funny?" he growled.

"You got something on your cheek," she said sweetly.

Ethan gently rubbed his cheek, but Theresa shook her head.

"No, here," she replied, leaning in closer and gently rubbed it off.

Ethan’s heart began pounding wildly in his chest.

I wonder if she feels it too.No, you loser. She’s made it clear that she’s still not over Chuck. And, what about Gwen?

"I want to put those buckets of yours to use."

Theresa pulled away from him and started digging through the pile of toys.

Ethan came to his senses and jumped up.

"I propose a little competition, Ms. Lopez- Fitzgerald."

"A competition, huh?" she breathed, her eyes dancing.

"I say whoever builds the best castle DOESN"T get thrown in the ocean!"

"Who’s the judge?"

"Well…you can be unbiased for a moment, right?"

"I suppose so… you’re on, Crane!"

Theresa jumped up and turned the radio on. She grabbed a bucket, and the contest was on!

Games, changes and fears
When will they go from here
When will they stop
I believe that fate has brought us here
And we should be together babe
But we're not

I play it off but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool, but feenin'

I try to say goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there

I may appear to be free
But I'm just a prisoner of your love
And I may seem all right and smile when you leave
But my smiles are just a front
Just a front, hey
I play it off, but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool but I'm feenin'

I try to say goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there

Here is my confession
May I be your possession
Boy I need your touch
Your love, kisses and such
With all my might I try
But this I can't deny

I play it off but I'm dreaming of you
(But I'm dreaming of you babe)
And I'll keep my cool but I'm feenin'

I try to say goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try
(Try to hide it)
To hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there
(When you are not there ahh)
Goodbye and I choke
(Yeah yeah yeah)
I try to walk away and I stumble
(Hey hey hey)
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
(Say it Lord)
My world crumbles (Lord)
When you are not there
(The Lord kisses us)

Goodbye and I choke
(I'm choking)
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not near
(When you are not near yeah yeah yeah)
Yeah yeah
